Generation What???

Man…we love to invent and expand on words nowadays…Here is a new article from Examiner.com about a new generation…Generation “O”. I like this one…defined by attitude rather than age :-)

New post-Baby Boom generation emerge

  1. Jennifer Williams

Generation O was introduced by the NYTimes as an alternative name for GenY, no more. The idea that a new generation be created by lumping three separate generations (GenJones,Genx,GenY) into one 45 year generation is laughably absurd.

As is the ridiculous notion that generations be determined by attitude rather than age.? Words have meanings, and cultural generations have a very specific meaning, which as literally every generations expert will tell you, is based exclusively on birth years.

Otherwise, there would be no meaning to the concept of generations. If it was based on attitudes, who would determine which attitudes fit which person and generation? Each person would have to decide themselves, so, for example, if I was born in 1950, but felt like my attitude was more like a WWII Gen person, then that means I’m part of the WWII Gen?! Or if I related more to GenY, than I’d be part of GenY?! Even though, born in ‘50, I’d be a 58 yr old, claiming to be in the same genration as 20 year olds?! Absurd.

A related issue is Obama’s membership in Generation Jones (between the Boomers and Generation X). I’ve seen numerous very credible experts emphatically insist that Obama is part of GenJones; if Obama’s generational identity is of interest to you, click this link…it goes to a page filled with lots of articles and videos of famous people discussing Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser, and the many implications of this for his Presidency: http://www.generationjones.com/2008election.html

  2. Excellant point…well said!
